Wood shingles are great for historic homes, easy to maintain and repair, and generally last about 50 years. The obvious downside is they go up in flames if any fire gets near them.

It’s important to make sure the shingles are pressure treated to resist mold and mildew. The major drawback other than lack of fire resistance is price, wood shingles are one of the most expensive types on the market.
