Eco Roofs

Eco roofs are living breathing roofs with plants and growing media that take the place of of a traditional roof. These roofs are engineered with many lasanga like layers of material that provide support, insulation, and a place for the plants and roots to thrive.

Like a standard roof, eco roofs are built to shed water.

All eco roofs include a single or multi-ply water proofing layer, drainage, growing media, and the plants. There are basically two types of systems: Extensive and Intensive.

Extensive Eco Roofs are thinner, lighter, and less expensive. The plants used must be very hardy (typically alpine ground covers). Saturated roofs weigh in around 17lbs/sq ft.

Intensive Eco Roofs are much more robust and expensive. These roofs include larger plants, fountains, and even trees. These roofs drastically reduce heating and cooling costs because of their thickness.

These Roofs are becoming more popular every day. A huge number of new commercial construction projects are featuring eco roofs, while older structures are being retro fitted to incorporate more eco positive elements.
